It All Starts With Yourself

I love how the New Year brings forth new opportunities and new visions. Everyone is optimistic and looking forward to starting a new and better year.

I have to admit, I've never been too keen on New Year resolutions, though I adore the idea. Sure, there is the argument that you can make a change any time during the year but isn't it lovely that the beginning of each year drives people to make changes to better themselves?

Nothing makes me happier than an ambitious person. It's intoxicating and contagious. It is the type of person you want to surround yourself with. Whether you're making a resolution to become more fit, eat healthier, or to stop a bad habit of yours, good for you! The first step is dedicating yourself to this new lifestyle.

While resolutions typically last throughout January and then disappear until the following January, the idea that someone wants to make a change will hopefully spark a fire in them. Encourage yourself to become a better 'you'.

This year, I went with a resolution that's a little more broad and a little selfish.

I saw where a friend of mine had shared an article from Thought Catalog on Facebook earlier this morning. As I was reading through it, a particular line made me stop cold.

"I hope in the New Year, you quit waking up unhappy and find what it is that will make you want to get out of the bed in the morning."

This is where my resolution came to fruition. Maybe the key to sticking with a resolution is to set one main goal. While striving to achieve this main goal, you can plan out smaller paths to make the trip more realistic.

My goal this year is to focus on myself. To make myself happy.

What?! Focus on yourself? Make yourself happy? That's just selfish and preposterous.

Well, hold on there. I didn't say that I say I was going to ignore others entirely while focusing on myself. I haven't even defined yet what makes me happy.

I want to be happy. I want to be healthy. I want to devote more time to volunteering. I want to inspire someone to change their life. I want to pick up someone when they're down. I want to do something for me. I want to find my passion. I want to find my dedication.

I want to focus on making the world a better place by starting with myself.

2016 was a fantastic year. I learned, I grew up, I met amazing people, I traveled, I loved, and I was loved. What a blessing.

Why not focus on making 2017 an even better year? The only thing holding me back is myself.

To this year being your best year to date. All you have to do is make the decision to make the world  a better place by starting with yourself. Happy New Year!
